Our Partnership with Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Brewery Gulch Inn, along with the other establishments in the Enthusiast Hotel Collection, partners with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, offering birders the chance to become familiar with and seek out the local species that live in and around the inn. Our unique location—across from the ocean and right down the road from Big River, as well as near multiple state parks and large swaths of undeveloped wilderness, makes the area particularly rich in wildlife, including its large number of bird species.

To provide a truly unique experience to bird-watching enthusiasts who stay at the inn, Brewery Gulch Inn connects guests with local experts who offer professional guidance and curated tours of bird habitat. These tours allow guests to study migration patterns, nesting rituals, and more, and also to learn about the area’s local efforts to protect vulnerable species.

Pre-arrival, guests can take online courses from the Cornell Lab’s Bird Academy to help prepare for their next birding adventure. Courses include how to start birding by ear and even how to draw birds. Consider taking along the free Merlin Bird ID app to get help identifying birds by sight and sound, or submit bird sightings online through the Lab’s eBird platform or the eBird app to help scientists tracking the health of bird populations.

Founded in 1915, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology enjoys an international level of acclaim and academic respect and appreciation for its work studying birds and paving the way for current and future global conservation efforts, and is a member-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and protection of the natural world.
