A good night for soup
Café Beaujolais does it again
I texted my friend at 5:00pm:
“Do you want to grab something to eat with me tonight?”
“Sure! Where and when?”
“Café Beaujolais? Say, 6:15?”
“Perfect. See ya then!”
Now, if you have been reading this blog for very long or have followed us on Instagram for a while, you will probably recognize the name of that restaurant – Café Beaujolais – because we seem to talk about them quite a bit… We can’t help it! We love them! There’s something about how casually delicious everything is there, how charming the gardens, how creative the chef, how community-minded the owners and staff. So quite often, whenever we find ourselves in need to something to eat, our thoughts drift off into daydreams of their tasty, tasty menu. And sometimes (well, perhaps more often than just SOMETIMES), we give in to those visions dancing through our head and wend our way on over to Café B’s take out window.
And that was exactly what happened on the evening in question. I was hungry… I wanted to visit with my friend... I didn’t really feel like cooking… it was the perfect excuse for a visit to the Café!
As we stood in line, awaiting our turn at the window, we perused the menu posted on the wall – did we want Pork Belly Tacos? Smash Burgers? Asian Salad? Or… oh wait! We saw a recently typed-up sign proclaiming that the kitchen was now serving soups! That sounded just right for this beautiful, slightly chilly fall evening. We placed our order and meandered around back to the gardens to chat and catch up as we waited for our food to come out. Perfect evening light filtered through the wonderful array of trees, bushes, succulents, and flowering shrubs tastefully arranged around the lovely space. We wandered into the vegetable garden to look at the towering kale and gently buzzing bee hives, then one of the gals came out calling our name, our meal safely tucked inside the brown paper bag in her hand. We staked our claim at one of the gorgeous handmade picnic tables and pulled out the steaming containers.
Mmm. Potato & Bacon Soup. Butternut Squash Bisque. We reverently inhaled as we opened the lids. Ahhh. We tore off little bites of the fresh bread they had given us and gently dunked them in the savory pints of harvest-time heaven in front of us. Oh yes. We agreed – these soups were exactly what we had been craving, even though we hadn’t fully known it ourselves until that first taste. We slowly savored each spoonful as we talked about life and food and work and friends and all manner of things. The light quietly faded until we were almost the only people out in the garden, still chasing the last little drops of goodness in our containers as we talked. This was what we needed. Good soup. Good company. Beautiful evening in a beautiful place. Café Beaujolais had done it again - everything was just right.
Café Beaujolais is currently open Wednesday-Sunday, 11:30am-7:00pm, with pizzas from their Brickery available until 5:00pm. While all their food is currently being served to go, you can still enjoy it in their beautiful gardens. Or bring it back to the inn for a homey meal on your own private deck overlooking Smuggler’s Cove.
