Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
Gardens by the Sea…
As we gaze out upon the sunlit dewdrops highlighting the tips of the leaves, we are reminded yet again of the bounty and beauty of the landscape along our beautiful coast, and what better way to spend the day than a stroll through the harmonious collection of gardens available to local and coastal visitors year-round. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a treasure trove of native flora and fauna complete with educational information. Tours, workshops, exhibits, and various programs are available for all ages to learn more about the conservation of our Northern California coastal ecosystem. An incredible resource supported by community and visitor donations, a non-profit organization benefiting anyone who wants to take advantage of spare time and fully enjoy the 47 acres and 4 miles of trails that help preserve public access to the coast. There are even a couple of great small coves to hike down to that have spectacular small beaches to pull up a log and take in the salty sea breeze, stealing an uninterrupted moment for yourself.
Starting November 26th, and running until almost Christmas, is the legendary 11th Annual Festival of Lights. On display for your viewing pleasure Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from 5-7pm, giving a completely different night-time perspective to the gardens that isn’t available otherwise as they typically close at 4pm. It’s an incredible sight to see with all the glittering lights amongst the greenery, truly a special experience not to miss!
The wonderful and friendly staff offers up many opportunities for education. Upcoming tours and workshops include mushroom identification and wreath making, self-guided walks, and they even boast a 3 month long Master Gardener program perfect for sharpening up on all your landscaping and gardening skills. They also have bird watching with the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society.
This time of year late perennials, winter heaths and heathers, camellias, magnolias, azaleas, early rhododendrons, grevilleas, and wild mushrooms grace the gardens with their presence. Our mild winters on the coast provide for a substantial amount of growth that isn’t possible in climates that have more seasonal changes. We are so fortunate to have yearlong access to the quiet forests, fern canyons, rare conifers, spectacular ocean views, bird migrations, and whale watching which peaks during the winter and spring. Locally sourced sculptures and art are sprinkled throughout the property, adding a magical touch to the already magnificent environment that surrounds us as we meander slowly, soaking up the charm and elegance of the nature around us.
Sitting on the various benches and dawdling along the paths, taking in the wonder of the surroundings while the sunshine peeks through the clouds, we’re grateful to have such a fantastic resource at our fingertips, already planning our next visit for when the Magnolias are in full bloom. Such majestic trees with the entrancing fragrance of oversized blossoms. An all-time favorite of mine that calls me to the gardens as the right time of year approaches, they aren’t exactly readily available in other parts of our coast. I can’t help but picture garden gnomes and fairies flitting about their branches and nestling in the soft petals of the blooms.
Open every day 10-4pm, tickets must be purchased in advance for timed entry, check out their website and make it easy, at $15 per person it’s quite the deal. A yearly membership is also an affordable way to support this great asset to the community, comes with free admission and the ability to enter anytime you’d like. The garden store gift shop and nursery are open daily as well, reservations are not required to do your shopping. They have an amazing selection of plants, various gifts, and stocking stuffers if you’re looking for something unique and memorable, many of the goods being from local artisans.
