The Caspar Pub House
“Quintessentially British”
Halfway between Mendocino and Fort Bragg lies the tiny town of Caspar, if you blink you could miss it! Going west off the highway, down at the intersection of appropriately named Caspar Street and Caspar Road, lies the historic center of this lovely sleepy village. Across from the community center and church, we rolled up on the old roadhouse, which began operations in 1906. Keeping locals and visitors entertained, it used to be one of the very last real roadhouses in California until its closure in 2013. Site of many popular performances over the decades, it is sorely missed. So many bands & unique showings have appeared to play for the coastal masses,. Local & far-reaching acts have found the small stage to be a favorite location for the old school appeal and close-knit family vibe the coast provides.
We are excited to share that the historic building now houses the fantastic, “Quintessentially British”, family friendly, Caspar Pub House. With the authentic English feel, the interior is cozy with overstuffed armchairs and a sweetly curated eclectic collection of great furniture. The renovations done by the new owners have almost completely erased that old dive bar smell. Lamps, a fireplace, and pictures of British icons complete the décor beautifully.
The copper bar top is well loved, and the taps contain local beers, as well as an impressive double chocolate stout from Young’s, imported from Eagle Brewery, Britain’s oldest brewing site from the 1550’s. Many other English beverage options are available, including refreshing flavored sodas from Fentimens of England, Samuel Smiths, and Old Speckled Hen. They have a very spacious outdoor space and beer garden with barrels, stools, and an occasional umbrella in case the sun is just too bright glinting off the fog of our coastal summertime weather. They have completed the space by adding a billiards room, and even a dart board. The stage is prepped and ready for live music when this can be provided, usually on weekends. I hear tales of upcoming concerts that should be quite invigorating and lively, the dance floor is so very inviting.
The food is amazing and delicious, we were thrilled to try something new, it doesn’t happen too often here on the coast! Our party of five was hungry and we ordered just about as much off the menu as we could. High volume of business delegated that they were out of a few menu items, but we knew we would be back to try those offerings soon, and we had more than enough in front of us already. We fought over the Scotch Egg a bit, as it was clearly the table favorite, it is over the top scrumptious, we all agreed we could almost eat this delectable dish every day, if you have never tried one, it is a must! We split most of our orders, as we all had a difficult time deciding on just one thing. The burgers were to die for, fish and chips, bangers and mash, chicken tikka masala, were also a big hit. The fish and chips are divine, and super fresh local fish makes this an excellent choice, get the mushy peas sauce to accompany this classic, an unforgettable flavor you’ll definitely come back for.
Although we really could not afford another bite, we had to at least try one dessert, so we ordered the recognizably British, sticky toffee pudding. Absolutely blown away by the rich and sugary dessert, we ended this evening completely stuffed to the gills. After a quick chat out front about how much we adored the comfortable and friendly experience, a friend who lives six months out of the year IN England, said she felt like things were as authentically British as they should be for an American restaurant. We urge you to try this new restaurant here on the coast, we know you’re going to love it.
